Leighton Town 5 Norwich CBS 2: Injuries cost CBS chance of FA Vase upset

Norwich CBS, formerly Spixworth, were three minutes from victory after goals from Paul Cook and Matthew Doyle had given them a 2-1 lead. However, a late equaliser deprived them of a quarter final place as Leighton went on to score three goals in extra time after the visitors were reduced to 10 men through injury.

CBS had to make a late change to the starting XI when club captain, and defender, Daniel Barraclough's back injury reared up again forcing him out of the tie.

CBS made the prefect start when a whipped in cross from a corner allowed Cook to smash past the home keeper.

The scores were level when Leighton had a player free at the back post to head past the helpless John Howes.

With both teams matching each other the half ended 1-1 but CBS were dealt a blow at the break with Cook forced off through injury.

However, CBS took the lead on the hour mark when Doyle found himself through on goal and slotted past the on-rushing keeper. But the visitors' injury curse then struck again as CBS leading scorer Doyle also had to leave the field.

CBS were three minutes from victory when the assistant referee gave a throw to Leighton, who went on to whip the ball in for their striker to score from 10 yards.

CBS' management made their last change with Dean Mortimer replacing Cross. Unfortunately Mortimer lasted only seven minutes before having to come off injured, leaving CBS with 10 men, and an uphill battle.

Leighton made the extra man count, scoring three more goals without reply making the score 5-2 and Leighton progressing into the draw on Monday.

'The club are very proud of the players for their efforts in the competition, they should be proud of what they have achieved,' a club statement said. 'No-one thought we would be in the fourth round of the FA Vase at the start of the season so the achievement is outstanding.
