Jersey's last pair scrambled a three from the last ball of the 50th over, bowled by Robbie Austin, to snatch an unlikely victory at Grainville.

Batting first, Norfolk made 173 for seven in their 50 overs, rescued from a perilous 60 for five by a sixth-wicket partnership of 86 by the two wicket-keepers in the squad, Luke Newton (40) and Stephen Gray (50 not out).

In reply, the hosts were cruising at 131 for one, opener Peter Gough making 75, but then lost four wickets for the addition of three runs.

Chris Brown and captain Paul Bradshaw took two wickets each and Jersey slipped to nine wickets down, needing nine to win, at the start of the last over.

They still needed three off the last ball, but a misfield and a poor throw to the bowler's end enabled the last pair to scramble home.

Norfolk used 14 players and Jersey 12 during the game - but a maximum of 11 were permitted to bat.

The match ended a four-day training programme on the island for Norfolk, who now face Essex II in their second pre-season match at Bishop's Stortford on Saturday.

Chairman of selectors Paul Borrett said: “It was a shame to lose the game in that fashion, but it was a very worthwhile trip.”
