Langley School’s rugby team one win away from day out at Twickenham
Langley School’s rugby players are due to take to the national stage this weekend when they travel to Allianz Park, home of reigning European champions Saracens.
They will be competing in the England Schools National Vase semi-finals against Dauntsey’s School from Wiltshire.
In the other semi-final Ripon School will take on Wirral Grammar School. The teams who emerge on top will gain the ultimate experience when they meet at Twickenham Stadium 11 days later for the Schools’ Final.
Langley, based near Loddon, beat holders Trent College from Nottinghamshire 40-0 in the earlier rounds.
Powerful centre and captain Andre Dunn was named in the England Under-18 squad earlier in the year and he will be a key player if the Norfolk school is to succeed.
“When you play the latter rounds of a knock-out competition, you go into the unknown,” he said. “Being able to concentrate on the way that you want to play, rather than worrying about the opposition, and executing your own simple game plan is vital if we are to succeed.”
Dunn leads the side with co-captain and No 8 Thomas Smith and they make up five Leicester Tigers Academy players in the squad.
Director of Sport and first team coach Tim Malone feels the players have the potential to make it down to the last two.
“It is testament to the work rate of the team that they are where they are,” he said. “The vast majority of our players are Norfolk-based and have come up as juniors through our school rugby programme. Their success has been built on honesty and hard work over a long period of time. The boys put in a huge amount of time behind the scenes to get it right on match days.”
Preparations in the build-up to the game have been hampered by snow and ice, although the week previously the school did seize upon an opportunity to train with North Walsham’s senior team on the 3G pitch at Easton College.
Weather permitting, kick-off is at 1pm this Saturday. Entry and parking are free and the game can be streamed live on www.youtube.com/user/officialRFUTV
