King’s Lynn Town’s FA Trophy hopes were left in tatters after a Halloween nightmare.

The Linnets rarely hit top gear and can have few complaints.

After falling behind on 37 minutes they got back into the game when Adam Marriott levelled on 59 minutes only to see their hopes dashed seven minutes fro the end of extra-time.

There was a scare for Lynn when Liam Hardy got a shot in from an angle which Alex Street blocked with his legs – a feat he repeated shortly afterwards.

The best football of the half came on the half hour mark when Frazer Blake-Tracey made a lung-busting run down the left flank and crossed for Marriott whose header drifted just wide.

Street had saved Lynn three times before the half hour mark but it was his lip which proved costly on 37 minutes. As he took a goalkick he lost his footing, the ball fell to Ryan Jarvis who couldn’t control it and while Blake-Tracey looked to have saved the day with a fine tackle, Hardy picked up the loose ball and fired home from 15 yards.

Lynn needed a huge improvement in the second half to keep their interest in the competition alive, and up stepped the impressive Marriott, firing home from 20 yards in the 59th minute after Hawkins had pulled the ball back from the byline.

It signalled a good spell for Lynn, although Marriott will wonder how the keeper managed to keep out his neat flick from close range – and then repeated the trick from a Hawkins cross 10 minutes later.

Lynn couldn’t find a way past Roberts in normal time, and when Hawkins missed an open goal you wondered whether they could do it in the added period. And that failure cost them dearly when sub Jude Oyibo turned in the area with seven minutes remaining and fired low past Street.
