King's Lynn Town director of football Kevin Boon yesterday denied Wisbech's young keeper Alex Street is the club's first signing at The Walks.

Boon did confirm Lynn's management team is interested in the teenage stopper who was handed a Ridgeons Premier debut last season by joint boss and former Fenmen chief Gary Setchell.

Wisbech officials claim Lynn had already lined up Street and striker Scott Cubberley but Lewis Thompson and Anthony Reeve will turn down the chance of a reunion with Setchell.

'We don't intend to sign players or make any announcements until June,' said Boon. 'Yes, Alex Street is a player we are aware of. Setch worked with him last year and he knows his qualities but we are talking to a lot of players and maybe some other clubs want to play us off against one another.

'We are not going to be the King's Lynn who pay big money, which has maybe been the case in the past. We are selling what this club can become. If you look at the stadium and the support base, we will build gradually over time but everything has to go hand in hand. Rest assured, we will still have a reasonable squad and we have a lot of work ahead of us but we have been planning for a lot of months now.'

Fenmen boss Steve Appleby revealed yesterday ever-present keeper Street had rejected an offer to stay with the Ridgeons Premier Division outfit in favour of joining Lynn's United Counties League adventure.

'It is disappointing that Alex will be leaving after having a change of heart but the news that Thompson and Reeve are staying outweighs that,' he said. 'I understand Lynn is also after Scott Cubberley and I will be speaking to him this week and hopefully he will stay, too.

'Lynn will be playing in the UCL next season and having played in both leagues I would say the Ridgeons is far superior. I am surprised Alex is leaving but I am already speaking to a possible new goalkeeper and have spoken to four or five outfield players in the last week.'

The Linnets are scheduled to begin their pre-season build up with a glamour friendly against a Norwich XI on Tuesday, July 13 at The Walks. The club's application to enter a reserve side in the Anglian Combination will be heard at the league's annual meeting in early June.

'We have applied to join and they have indicated we would effectively be treated as a relegated club from the Ridgeons and as a result begin two levels lower,' said Boon. 'That obviously has to be rubber stamped at the league's annual meeting but we are very grateful for their support.'
