Midfielder George Thomson's dream of landing a full-time deal with Chester appear to be over.

The King's Lynn Town playmaker, on contract with the Linnets until the end of the forthcoming season, appeared to have impressed the Conference Premier outfit during a two-game trial. However, he played in Lynn's 3-0 friendly defeat to a strong Cambridge United XI on Wednesday and boss Gary Setchell expects it won't be the last time the 22-year-old is seen in a Town shirt.

Setchell, who takes his men to Wisbech Town this afternoon, said: 'George went for a two-game trial, he didn't get a deal, and he's come back to King's Lynn. Simples.

'The time had to come when he came back to Lynn. We gave him the opportunity to go have his trials but it hasn't quite worked out for him. George will get his time, there's no question about that, if he keeps performing at the level he did last season and this pre-season because he's a good footballer.

'He was on the verge of a full-time deal. I think Chester wanted him but they couldn't find the funds for him. He could have sulked but he showed great character against Cambridge. I thought I'd lost him, I thought he'd done enough at Chester, so it's another player we've got.'

Lynn have already played Wisbech this summer, losing 2-1, but head back down the A47 after their planned home friendly against AFC Sudbury was cancelled.

'Wisbech have done us a favour really. Sudbury, again, to put an end to speculation, decided to go and play a game in Glentoran,' Setchell also told his club's official YouTube channel.

'They'd said they were going to play us. Batchy (David Batch) said he was taking his full first team and we could play their reserves and under-21s. No disrespects to them, I don't know how good they are, but it would have done us no good whatsoever. It'll be competitive at Wisbech. We didn't call the friendly off. It was nothing to do with the Speedway World Cup. It's just Sudbury have a game in Ireland.'
