King's Lynn Stars number one Niels-Kristian Iversen still harbours Speedway Grand Prix hopes - despite admitting he is disappointed to have missed out on this season's Danish wild card slot.

The 29-year-old has been in sensational form across Europe during the early stages of the 2012 speedway campaign, rocketing to third in the Elite League averages behind Poole duo Darcy Ward and Chris Holder.

However, despite top-scoring in five of Lynn's eight meetings - and finishing second in the first round of the Danish Championships - the two-time World Cup winner was overlooked by the Danmarks Motor Union (DMU).

They chose to hand their June 9 Grand Prix place to Peterborough Panthers' 20-year-old Michael Jepsen Jensen, who finished third behind Iversen, in their country's championship.

Iversen said: 'I'm still a bit disappointed about it, even if I didn't expect to get the slot.

'I know how things work in Denmark with our federation. When you get to a certain age I feel they don't care about you. It's all about the younger riders and I find it's a little bit unfair.

'I've been riding well and I think I could have gone well in the GP. I don't want to let it bother me too much though - if they don't want me there they don't want me there.

'I'm looking to get back into the Grand Prix but there's a lot of politics involved. I feel I can do something and I have ambitions to get back involved because I'm riding at some of my best levels.'

Iversen, who top-scored with 13 out of a possible 15 points during Lynn's 58-35 thumping of Woverhampton Wolves last Wednesday, rode in the GP series in 2006 and 2008.

Rob Lyon will be hoping his main man, who insists he is full of confidence, carries on his scintillating form tonight as an unchanged Lynn s welcome second-placed Lakeside Hammers to the Norfolk Arena.

The Stars number one said: 'I'm happy about my form and I've never started a season this well. 'However, there's never a long way from going from being called normal to good, and the way back down from good is never very difficult to achieve either.

'I'm just keeping focused and taking every meeting as it comes. I'm full of confidence and many small things are coming together. I've started off this year where I finished last.

'It's wouldn't say it's as much to do with wearing the number one jacket because to be honest I've been riding well for all of my clubs.'

The Hammers, who are still coming to terms with the death of their captain Lee Richardson earlier this month, feature two former Stars, number one Peter Karlsson and Davey Watt.

Gates open at 6.30pm. Parade starts at 7.30pm.
