King's Lynn legend Michael Lee hopes the club's fans can help cheer his Mildenhall side to the National League title at his former Norfolk Arena home this evening.

Stars icon Lee, who won the world championship in 1980, was idolised by Lynn fans during his spells at Saddlebow Road for his swashbuckling style on the track as well as his colourful life off it.

And tonight he is looking for the Fen Tigers to create some more fond memories in Norfolk by seeing off the Dudley Heathens in the play-off final second leg.

Mildenhall co-promoter Lee said: 'I'll be coming back to my old stomping ground and it's always nice to be at Lynn.

'There'll be plenty of old faces there and new ones and hopefully, with my connections, the Lynn fans will get behind Mildenhall and give us that extra push.

'Dudley finished top of the league, one place above us, so they are favourites. We'll have to dig deep, especially as we're not on our home track, but I've got faith in our boys. We've done well at Lynn and it would be big for us to win the title. I'm sure it will be an emotional night.'

The clash should have been held at Mildenhall's West Row track but was moved yesterday due to it being deemed unfit for racing.

Lee praised Lynn owner Buster Chapman for his help in allowing the meeting to take place as the season, which has been blighted by miserable weather, prepares to come to a close.

'We had Stock Car meetings at Mildenhall at the weekend and it rained during most of Sunday,' said Lee.

'The track ended up looking like pea soup. The conditions were impossible. We did all we could do, and it's a shame to have to change the venue at late notice, but we can't thank Buster enough.

'It gives us a chance because if he hadn't agreed to host the meeting we may have been unable to ride it at all. It'll be a hell of a clash between the top two teams in the National League. There's a bit of history between us so I'm sure it will be a ding-dong battle.'

The two sides met in a double header at Monmore Green last night.

Dudley won the first leg of the play-off final 51-37, before racing again in the second leg of the Knockout Cup final.

Mildenhall went into the latter with a 28-point lead following a thumping home win over the former Cradley Club, whose chairman is Sky Sports speedway figurehead Nigel Pearson, earlier this month.

Gates open tonight at 6.30pm. Racing starts at 7.45pm. Tickets cost adults 12, concessions 11 while children aged 15 and under can get in for free.
