The youngest riders had the best of the conditions at the Iceni Velo Snetterton Cross.

Florence Barnett of the King's Lynn CC provided the first local winner when she won the Under 12s race outright, ahead of first boy Harley Gregory (West Suffolk Wheelers) and Dylan Starkey (Welwyn Wheelers) who – like Florence - is now certain of their category win in the Eastern League.

Also in the freezing but dry opening events Michael Swindells (sixth in Under 10s) gave organisers Iceni Velo their highest placing of the day, just one place a better than Iceni's Joseph Smith, whose seventh in the Youth was his season's best personal result.

As sleet set in – and it hardly gave up for the rest of the day – Alison Hogg made certain of winning the Women's Senior League.

Alison, who rides for Push Sport/Barford Van Hire and lives in Norwich, was second in the race to young Ceci Hime of St Ives CC, but Hime divides her racing between different leagues so is not a contender for overall position.

New fencing around the water retention basin at World Horse Welfare unexpectedly introduced a long slippery reverse camber section which proved the star challenge.

Few were more sure-wheeled there than Senior winner Stephen James (Renvale RT) who beat 2017 Snetterton winner James Madgwick to clinch the Senior Men's League.

Third was Kieran Jarvis (OnForm) just ahead of Connor Rumble (East Coast) who was first Junior. Rumbles' club-mate Peter Farrell was top Norfolk finisher in the Vets 50-plus.

Among time trial major award winners at the East District CA prize presentation at Carbrooke were Verity Smith (Stowmarket & Dist), Jen Smart (VC Norwich) and VeloVelocity team members Matthew Senter and David Proctor.

As icy roads gave way to sleety conditions, just three took part in the morning reliability trial in which District chairman Don Saunders clearly had something of a hard time.

Fortunately, Don did not have to present the awards this year – that honour being shared between Ted Jackson and Geoff Allum who had both just retired after decades of service at EDCA secretary and treasurer respectively.
