Norfolk suffered a second pre-season defeat when they were beaten by 55 runs by Essex second eleven at Bishop's Stortford on Saturday.

A magnificent 143 from opener Tom Huggins from 149 balls, including three sixes and 21 fours, helped the hosts to 284 for seven from 50 overs after they were put into bat.

Norfolk's attack struggled to contain the Essex batsman, with the pick of the bowlers spinner Chris Brown, who conceded just 26 runs from his 10 overs.

Huggins - who Norfolk could face again in three weeks' time at Manor Park as a member of the Suffolk side - shared useful partnerships with Tom Westley (41), Graham Napier (27) and Darran Thomas (34).

In reply, opener Carl Rogers made 44, but Norfolk's respectable total of 229 for six was down to a sixth-wicket stand of 143 between Horsford pair Matthew Wilkinson (65) and Jaik Mickleburgh (63).

Norfolk start their MCCA Knockout Trophy campaign, bidding for another trip to Lord's, when they face Lincolnshire at Manor Park next Sunday.
