Howell lasts the pace to snatch victory

It was attacks from the gun in the Ipswich Bicycle Club road race - the blistering pace leaving several competitors behind on the first lap.
The quick fire attacks continued throughout the race, each doomed to be chased down, until a CC Hackney pair escaped with three kilometres to go and at the line Rhys Howell snatched the win by a few inches from clubmate Clem Berrill. Howell, from Dalston in inner London, had been prominent at the front throughout the 60-mile race which was run off in fine but cool conditions on the Gosbeck-Helmingham-Crowfield circuit 10 miles north of Ipswich.
Diss riders Martin and Richard Dunnett, Gavin Moore (Stowmarket and District) and last year’s winner Lee Desborough were also among the attackers.
A promising break formed on the last lap including Ben Nicholson from new Norwich club Iceni Velo, Moore, Price and Murrell from London Phoenix, but attacks from the London club split the break and it was caught at Pettaugh leaving it open for the CC Hackney pair to make their successful bid.
Riders in the Wisbech Wheelers 10-mile time trial faced a rising wind – rarely good news on exposed Fenland courses. Chris Rimes (Fenland Clarion) repeated his win in the recent CC Breckland “10” – this time finishing in 22:14 ahead of the promoting club’s Paul Ashby (22:32) and West Suffolk Hilly winner Andre Dyason (VC10, 22:41).
Top King’s Lynn CC finisher was Ken Roesner (23:46) while a new KLCC name was Steven Neill who was 10th in 24:26.
Chris Nudds (CC Breckland) was best on veteran’s age standard – his 24:10 beating the standard for his 62 years by 5:52. Winners of the Wisbech 10 for teams of two were Gary Smith and Daniel Collins of the King’s Lynn CC in 24:03 while the fastest tandem was ridden by Mike and Michael McInerney of the home club in 25:24
Entrants for the Stowmarket and District 20-mile time trial on Saturday, April 16 should note that the organiser’s address is 68 Newton Road, Ipswich and not as in the CTT Handbook.
