Wymondham claimed a notable victory over Holt, who play two divisions above them in the league structure, to reach the semi-finals of the Woodforde's Norfolk Senior Cup.

Wymondham are having a successful season both in the league and the RFU Junior Vase and edged a tight game against a Holt side who are also going well in their division.

The weather was cloudy with rain forecast, with a fair breeze and the pitch was in reasonable condition following all the rain and the fact that it had been played on on Boxing Day.

Holt played into the wind from the kick-off and took an early lead of 3-0 when Jackson kicked a penalty after four minutes. Holt were taking the game to their opponents, but further points would not come and it was the visitors who recorded the next score, John Payne converting a penalty from 40 metres to level the scores after nine minutes.

Holt took the game back into their opponents' half and Jackson was close after a good break, being stopped short of the line. The pressure was maintained and following a break by Young, who was making a welcome return to the side after an early season injury, Jarry-Ryan went in for an unconverted try, taking the lead to 8-3 after 20 minutes. This was followed up two minutes later when Jackson scored another unconverted try, increasing the lead to 13-3.

Wymondham refused to buckle after these two quick scores and following a counter attack scored an unconverted try through David Martin to reduce the deficit to 13-8 after 20 minutes. Holt had the chances to add to their lead, but they were frittered away and it was the visitors who scored the next try after 33 minutes through Rokko, which was not converted, but levelled the scores at 13-13. There was no further scoring in the half and Holt were left to reflect on errors when having shown moments of domination against a lively side who were up for the game.

The second half was played in rain, after a dry start to the match, making the light dismal.

Holt were on the back foot to start with, but kept their line intact and gradually worked their way up field for Gray to score another unconverted try after 10 minutes. The lead had been re-taken at 18-13, but the hosts needed to up the rate of play and to keep possession to put pressure on their opponents.

Wymondham, however, had other ideas and took play back into Holt's half with some determined running and were eventually rewarded with a converted try from Josh Mickleburgh to take the lead 18-20 with a quarter of an hour remaining.

Holt strove hard to retake the lead but the chance would not come. They did have the opportunity to do so with a penalty, which was just off target, when perhaps it might have been better to have kicked to the corner for a line-out.

With time running out and in torrential rain, Holt's luck was also running out, being unable to make the breakthrough against determined opponents, who were looking to increase their lead. The final whistle came to put an end to Holt's suffering, giving the spoils to Wymondham, who on their performance, deserved their victory.

This was a game for Holt to forget and to get on with the business of consolidating their league position, starting with a visit to lowly placed Stowmarket on Saturday. They will be looking to complete a double over their Suffolk opponents, having beaten them earlier in the season 18-17 at High Kelling.
