Norwich City midfielder Leroy Fer is setting his sights on World Cup glory with Holland – after becoming the first Norwich City player to score at a World Cup last night.

The 24-year-old midfielder made his mark in Sao Paulo when he scored the opening goal for his country within two minutes of coming on as a substitute, in a 2-0 win against Chile.

Fer had only just replaced Wesley Sneijder in the middle of the park in Holland's final Group B game, when he headed home a 77th minute opener.

Holland added a second in injury time through Memphis Depay, to seal the victory and top spot in the group.

Fer was making his first appearance of the tournament in the match and made Norwich City history with his goal.

He joins Martin O'Neill (Northern Ireland, Spain 1982), Robert Fleck (Scotland, Italy 1990) and Andy Townsend (Republic of Ireland, Italy 1990) as the only Canaries to play at a World Cup finals.

Townsend did score a penalty in a shootout victory against Romania for Ireland but Fer is the first City player to score a World Cup goal in open play.

Now the former Feyenoord and FC Twente player is hoping for more glory in Brazil, saying: 'We arrived in confident mood. We knew that we could qualify from the group, and now here we are.

'We're ready for the knock-out phase. It's a different type of competition now, but that doesn't bother us. We want to win it all.'

Fer and his team-mates are now preparing to face Mexico in the first knock-out round on Sunday (5pm BST) and the Norwich midfielder, who scored four goals in 32 games for City last season, goes forward with plenty of confidence after scoring.

'It was a great goal, and the cross from (Daryl) Janmaat was terrific,' Fer added, speaking to FIFA.com. 'I met it perfectly. I think it shows that I'm dangerous in the air.

'A point would have been enough for us, so we could have just sat back and defended. But we scored one goal, and then added another. It's a great feeling.'
