A Hethersett man has spoken of his pride after being chosen to take part in the London Olympics torch relay.

Shane Hull, chairman of Hethersett Olympic Committee and Hethersett Parish Councillor, will be one of 8,000 people nationally to carry the Olympic torch on its route round the country on its way to the London Olympic Park.

Mr Hull will carry the flame for approximately 300 metres in Acle on July 5, the same day as it pays a special off route early morning visit to Hethersett to mark the village's work over the past three years when it has organised more Olympic-themed events per head of population than any other village, town or city in the country.

He was nominated to carry the torch for his outstanding contribution to leading the village celebrations and chairing the Olympic Committee. Last year he was instrumental in bringing the London 1948 Olympic Torch to Hethersett.

Mr Hull has also been invited to attend a Downing Street reception with David Cameron to celebrate the London 2012 Games and will be presenting the Prime Minister with a copy of the 'Book of Hethersett' on behalf of the community.

'I am extremely proud to be given the honour of carrying the Olympic Torch. Whilst only 8,000 very fortunate people will get to carry the 2012 Olympic Torch, I am certain that my nomination is in recognition of the fantastic help, hard work and support that I have received from the Hethersett Olympic Committee, the four village schools, Parish Council, sports clubs, societies and a whole army of volunteers from the whole community that constitute the fantastic village of Hethersett - The Olympic Village.'

'Thank you to everyone within our Community that has contributed to make the dream of the Olympic Flame visiting Hethersett a reality,' he said.

The flame is due to be in Hethersett shortly after 6am on July 5.
