Diss turned in a brave first half performance against high-flying Hertford – but it was not enough to prevent them from slipping to their 12th defeat in 14 league matches.

Playing a side who have regularly piled up the points this season, Diss were only 10-3 down at the interval, with a penalty from Chris Beaird keeping them in touch. But it was a different story in the second half, with Hertford adding a further 26 points to win the match comfortably.

'This was always going to be a difficult match for us,' said director of rugby Dave Hall. 'We did all right in the first half but in the second half we were literally overpowered by a better side. This league is much stronger than it was last season and when we come up against the top sides it is very tough. It's got to the stage where we need to start picking up some points as a matter of urgency, but it doesn't get any easier with (leaders) Dorking up next. At least that one is at home!'
