Anthony Stannard and Warren Bates shone the brightest on a glorious weekend at Hunstanton Golf Club to win the Norfolk County Foursomes title.

The duo from Heacham Manor saw off Costessey Park's Shaun Larkins and Paul Hunter in an exciting final to get their hands on the Carrick and Thompson Bowls,

With good golf and good humour the order of the day, Stannard and Bates took an early lead and kept their noses in front until the holes ran out for their opponents.

The match finished on the 15th green, with Stannard and Bates, having played two quality shots, facing a birdie putt from the fringe that left Larkins and Hunter with no room for manoeuvre.

The champions had seen off Julian Ellis and Stuart Hudson (Bawburgh/Dereham) in the morning semi-finals while the losing finalists beat Mundesley's Matthew Craske and Tyler Crosby, who went on to finish third.

The winners of the second flight competition were youngsters Giles Evans and Toby Lane (Thetford/Dunston Hall) who beat father and son Stuart and Ross Ballingall from Dunston Hall in another exciting final.

Evans and Lane took a strong grip early on, but the more experienced Ballingalls ate into their lead and it all came down to the final hole, with Evans and Lane needing to get up and down from a tricky spot just off the green to secure the win.

Evans went on to play a delightful chip which checked on the fringe and released down to the hole side, leaving just a tap-in, a fitting way to take title.

In the third/fourth play-off John Shapland and Roger Garrod (Swaffham) took the honours from Tim Hoare and Mark Butt (Heacham Manor/King's Lynn).

On Saturday a bumper field of 84 pairs, featuring most of big hitters of Norfolk amateur golf, teed off in the popular handicap competition.

Round one leaders Andrew Horsburgh and Ian Farnham of Thetford returned 40 points, followed by Evans and Lane on 38 points.

There was a whole bunch of pairs handing in scores of 37 points, including Larkins and Hunter, Hoare and Butt and James Ong and Trevor Cave of Eaton.

Round two delivered the usual surprises, with the Ballingalls leading the pack with 40 points.
