Halesworth swimmer Neil Howell competed in the Great Britain Masters Long Course Age-Group Championships recently.

The venue was the Sheffield Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, recognised as the home of British swimming for many years.

Representing the East Anglian Swallowtails Howell was the oldest male competitor taking part.

It was also his 100th meeting since he began competing again in 2000. He had to take a year out in 2007 to undergo a hip replacement.

The veteran swimmer probably recorded his best ever performance in the three-day event. He became British champion in four events.

He won the 200m, 100m and 50m breaststroke races as well as the 50m backstroke.

Former Halesworth resident and once a member of Halesworth Dolphins, Debbie Matless, continued to prove she is one of the best freestyle and butterfly swimmers in the United Kingdom in her age group.

Swimming against former international swimmers she won four medals.

She came second in the 50m butterfly and was third in the 100m butterfly, 100m freestyle and 50m freestyle.

Debbie was swimming for the UEA City of Norwich swimming club.
