At least four tries and a victory is what West Norfolk boss Nigel Richardson wants from his title-challengers' trip to Ipswich YM.

The Greene King Eastern Counties Division One's second-placed team have won the same number of games as league leaders Newmarket but sit behind them having picked up two less bonus points.

The additional score is added when a team crashes over a quartet of times or more in a match and now Richardson is urging his troops to go for broke in their quest to maintain their championship charge.

West's boss, whose team can go top with a triumph this weekend as their Suffolk rivals are without a game, said: 'We're only one game after Christmas and virtually just half-way through the season but it would be psychologically great to back to the top of the league.

'We won't be taking any game lightly, especially tomorrow, but we're always trying to look to win them. It's important we start to pick up as many bonus points as we can though because that's the difference at the momentum between us and Newmarket.'

The North Wootton outfit strengthened their title tilt on Saturday by beating third-placed Ely 32-22 in a nail-biting affair at Gatehouse Lane.

West surged into a 12-0 half-time lead but took their foot off the gas with the victory seemingly secured mid-way through the second half. The city club clawed their way back into the game, to pick up a losing bonus point, and Richardson is warning West's players to take notice of their late sloppiness.

'We'd have taken the victory beforehand but we started off so fast and scored a couple of quick tries,' said the West chief.

'Then we sat back and they played around us. The lads got it into their heads they could score at will and it doesn't work like that. We eased up and that meant Ely also picked up a bonus point, which could prove to be really important.

'I hope it acted as a warning as we've been doing this a lot of late. We have to keep going for the whole of the game.'

Christian May (fractured shoulder), Ian Beck (unavailable) and Sean Brundle (work) will miss their side's trip to sixth-placed Ipswich. Same-league Swaffham, who lost 21-12 at Harwich & Dovercourt on Saturday, are without a competitive fixture and will face Norwich II away in a friendly.
