Trainer Mark Tompkins broke his 2014 seasonal duck when favourite Comrade Bond got home by half a length in the seven-furlong handicap at Great Yarmouth's seven-race meeting yesterday afternoon.

Tompkins has a fine record at Great Yarmouth, but has been out of form. However, jockey Ted Durcan brought the eventual winner through on the far side and held on to beat Afkar to record the trainer's 20th success at the venue in the last four seasons.

The 2/1 favourite was the third successive market leader of the meeting to win and completed a near 6/1 double for the jockey, who had got punters away to a great start when 5/4 chance Johara won the opener, the six-furlong maiden.

Durcan always had Newmarket trainer Chris Wall's filly in a good position and cruised away to win from Serata Di Gala and newcomer Vecheka, who finished a further 13 lengths back after being slow out of the stalls.

One of the most used sayings in racing is that it pays to bet on the outsider in a three-horse race.

It certainly did when trainer David Simcock's Waveguide won the feature, the fillies' handicap over the straight mile.

Waveguide went off the 4/1 outsider, but once apprentice jockey Lewis Walsh, who claims a seven-pound allowance, delivered the five-year-old two furlongs out, she always looked like winning, beating Saucy Minx with favourite Zeyran a disappointing third.

It was a first victory on turf for the mare which had previously been successful on the all-weather track at Lingfield in February.

The second three-runner race ruined the old adage, however, as it went the way of the favourite. Claimer Michael Murphy got Mark Johnston's 11/10 chance Notarised home without a fright, easily winning from Godolphin's Solidarity under Mickael Barzalona.

Most competitive heat of the afternoon saw Tom Queally score on Michael Bell's relative outsider Hot Mustard.

All six runners appeared to be in with a chance at some point in the mile handicap, but it eventually fell to the 10/1 shot who beat Speciality and the slow-starting complete outsider Prince of Burma.

Grey filly Strike A Light rewarded favourite backers with a winning performance in the seven-furlong handicap under Chris Catlin for trainer Rae Guest.

Only fifth of nine at Warwick last time, Strike A Light was well supported and in a tight contest hit the front in the final furlong and held on from fast finishing Blue Bounty and Sexy Secret, to win by a neck at 7/2.

In the finale of the day Camelopardalis repeated her earlier course success under Danny Brock for trainer Charlie McBride, holding off Ice Apple after making a bold and ultimately winning move half a mile out.

The winner, a 2/1 favourite, was the fifth winning favourite on the card.

The next meeting at Great Yarmouth is on Tuesday, June 3, first race at 5.25pm.
