Great Yarmouth conceded their 100th league goal of the campaign as they fell to defeat at home to Stanway Rovers.

A goal in each half from Newson along with a Fitzgibbon penalty and a Cheek tap in meant Yarmouth have failed to take at least a point in 22 of 27 games this season.

Stanway had the majority of possession for the opening 15 minutes with two chances each from Cheek and Newson being equalled to by Giacomelli's last ditch blocks and fine shot stopping from Cudden.

Despite that, Yarmouth's first attempt on goal came on 12 minutes. A high ball into the area by Henwood was headed wide from 12 yards by Barnden.

But the away side took control and won a penalty after good work on the right when Slatten's run was halted unfairly by a combination of Forbes and Henwood. Fitzgibbon stepped up to send Cudden the wrong way.

An equaliser could have come straight from the restart as McAra found Kemp in the box with time and space to pick his spot, but fired at Rutherford.

Yarmouth were unable to halt Stanway's attacks as they overpowered the midfield. After winning a challenge near the Yarmouth box on 24 minutes, Newson crossed for Maher to force a great low save from Cudden, turning the ball behind for a corner that came to nothing.

Further chances were created by the away side as the front five of Newson, Maher, Slatter, Fitzgibbon and Cheek all spurned chances to double their side's advantage. Instead Yarmouth could have made them pay when, after neat build up play, Kemp's cross was a little too high for McAra to head into an open net.

Instead Stanway doubled, and tripled, their advantage both when Yarmouth gave away possession sloppily near their own box. With 41 minutes gone Newson slotted home from 18 yards after Vide was robbed, and three minutes later Burkle lost possession in a similar position to Fitzgibbon who crossed for Cheek to tap in at the far post.

The second half began as the first had, with Stanway creating the first chance. On 51 minutes a through ball sent Cheek one-on-one with Cudden, with the Yarmouth keeper clearing with his feet just as the striker shot.

Three minutes later Yarmouth could have found a way back into the game as Barnden was found by a cross from Vide, but the midfielder hurried his shot which curled away from the goal.

Yarmouth were unable to hold on to possession with Stanway continuing to create and spurn goalscoring chances. But it was slack defending that gifted Stanway their fourth goal of the match and Yarmouth their 100th conceded goal in the league. A back pass from Giacomelli following a drop kick from Rutherford was intercepted by Newson, who had the easy task of poking the ball past Cudden and into the bottom corner of the net.

Stanway weren't done at four goals and continued to attack, sensing a good opportunity to give their goal difference a healthy boost, but the front five spurned goalscoring chances. Newson could have got his hat trick after hitting the post with a free header on 81 minutes

The Bloaters' first and only shot on target came with one minute of normal time remaining. A clearance found Barnden who subsequently sent Platten away on the left, and after cutting inside fired his shot straight at Rutherford.
