Sam Arthurton has made a flying start to the new season - and so have his club Great Witchingham.

The Norfolk opener recorded a superb unbeaten 128 to guide the Witches to their second successive win of the East Anglian Premier League campaign.

That was the perfect way to follow up the 86 not out in last weekend's National Club Championship victory over Saffron Walden, and made it 261 runs before the end of April following a solid 47 in the opening day success at Bury St Edmunds.

Saturday's opening home league fixture at Walcis Park was a high-scoring affair, with visitors Copdock and Old Ipswichian making a more than useful 254-9 in their 50 overs. The total was built around an opening partnership of 131 between Martyn Cull (76) and former Essex batsman Jaik Mickleburgh (69) but some solid bowling, with new recruit Mike Jones taking 3-47, kept it manageable for the hosts.

The stage was set for Witchingham's established opening pair to show what they could do and although James Spelman went early Arthurton was quick to rise to the challenge. With James Hale (75) providing invaluable support, he guided his side home for the loss of only three wickets, with his fine knock including 13 fours and two sixes.

Champions Swardeston also made it two wins out of two with a comprehensive six wicket win at Burwell.

The home side were dismissed for a paltry 104 in the 29th over, with only a 68-run partnership between Tom Jagot and Joe Tetley making it remotely respectable. Skipper Mark Thomas weighed in with three wickets for Swardeston while Joe Gatting and Matthew Taylor took two apiece, the latter without even conceding a run.

It wasn't completely plain sailing for the visitors as they slipped to 65-4 in reply, but Lewis Denmark and Jason Reynolds got together to see them home with 24 overs to spare.

Horsford got their campaign up and running with a comprehensive 116-run over Bury at Manor Park.

A total of 230-8, with Stephan Marillier making 118 at exactly one a ball, was more than enough as excellent figures of 4-14 from Norfolk skipper Chris Brown helped dismiss the visitors for just 114. Callum Metcalf (2-12) and Caleb Futter (2-30) also impressed.
