Peterborough United director of football Barry Fry hinted yesterday that Dion Dublin is set to reject Norwich's contract offer after the London Road outfit launched an audacious bid for the former England star.

Fry revealed Posh boss Darren Ferguson had offered Dublin a chance to prolong his playing career with the League Two club.

“Darren knows Dion well from their days together at Manchester United and his name did surface when we were discussing potential targets,” said Fry.

“Dion has been offered a new contract at Norwich, but I understand he doesn't want to commute from his Midlands home any more. He'd be a great bloke to have around the dressing room, but his age counts against him so I don't think it's going to happen. We are seeking a big, strong striker, but it won't be Dublin or John Hartson.”

City chief Peter Grant has given Dublin until the end of this week to make a final contract decision after the veteran was offered a new one year deal.

Billericay winger Chris Whelpdale, 20, is close to agreeing terms at London Road after turning down a move to Southend, and will join Walsall pair Dean Keates and Chris Westwood at the League Two club.
