A wonder strike from Tom Daniels sparked wild scenes as Great Yarmouth Town avoided an FA Vase replay by the skin of their teeth.
The Bloaters – who had already seen off one higher-level opponent in this season's competition – faced another team from the United Counties League Premier Division, one tier above where Yarmouth ply their trade. This time, it was Deeping Rangers at home, rather than Boston Town away, for the Step Six promotion hopefuls as they tried to progress to today's draw for the first round proper.
Early proceedings were marred by a serious-looking injury to Kyle Howell as Yarmouth turned up the pressure on their visitors. And although Rangers grew in stature the deadlocked remained for the whole 90 minutes to take the tie into extra time. With the clock ticking towards the final whistle in the second period, Daniels picked up a ball on the right wing and stormed towards the penalty area. He ghosted past two challenges and beat another couple of defenders before curling a superb shot into the top corner to lift the roof off of The Wellesley.
Yarmouth's Thurlow Nunn First Division rivals Diss Town also needed more minutes to see off brave Cambridgeshire Premier Wisbech St Mary. In their first ever game in the competition, the Purples lost 3-1 after-extra-time but did themselves proud on their own turf.
Jamie George put the 1994 winners ahead but Simon Oakley replied as the villagers held their own until beyond the 105-minute mark when Jason Cole and Chris Bartram ended their dreams of causing a huge shock. Downham Town failed to match Diss and the Bloaters' exploits as they slipped to a rare home defeat by two goals to nil against UCL Premier Sleaford Town.
Premier Division Swaffham Town and Gorleston both pocketed £800 prize money by winning their second qualifying round fixtures. The former won 2-1 at home against Bourne, thanks to an own goal and Alex Vincent strike, while Ricci Butler's Greens edged Walsham-le-Willows 3-2. Chris Sandford, an own goal and Peter Lambert's did the job for the Emerald Park outfit. It was a different story for Fakenham Town as they, despite Kyle Plumb's finish, lost 3-1 at Eynesbury Rovers.
In league action, Premier Division leaders Norwich United drew 0-0 at home to Stanway Rovers while Thetford lost 3-0 at home to Kirkley & Pakefield.
