FA Vase picture gallery: Dereham Town 2, Cogenhoe United 1

Dereham were looking to follow up last week's impressive cup win with a similar display against their UCL Division One opponents in the FA Vase second round.

Gary Starling hit a well struck free-kick narrowly off target in the opening minutes as the Magpies started brightly. In the 11th minute Cogenhoe defender Josh Olowoyo made a vital interception to deny Craig Bussens as he looked to convert Nicky Howell's cross from the left. The visiting player picked up a nasty injury when making the challenge and had to be replaced.

As Dereham continued to press Scott Roberts forced keeper James Stirling into a fine save to turn aside his crisp 20-yard drive. The Magpies' pressure finally paid off in the 24th minute. Olly Willis travelled down the right flank and delivered a dangerous cross from the byline which Dan Chiton headed out to Sam Borrer who blasted the ball home from 18 yards to put his side in front.

Minutes later Craig Bussens had two opportunities to net from close range before Stirling was able to save. Dereham continued to look the better side but could not find the vital second goal. While the visitors won two corners and a free-kick in an advanced position but failed to trouble Andy Wilton's goal.

Dereham came close to extending their lead in their 43rd minute when Adam Gusterson flicked a Gary Starling corner onto Nicky Howell who volleyed into Stirling's arms from close range. Dereham could have had the game sown up by half-time but they just had a slender lead to show for their dominance.

The second half started in a similar vein with the home side on top. Cogenhoe had their first chance in the 55th minute with Adam Gusterson charging down Darren Frost's close range shot. Dereham spurned another opportunity in the 65th minute when Luke Tuttle ballooned an effort high and wide after fine play by Olly Willis to set him up. Gusterson made another timely block to thwart substitute Ben Foster before Andy Wilton saved well from Tom Liversedge as the visitors remained a threat.

In the 87th minute Dereham were made to pay for their missed chances when Tom Liversedge drilled home a well struck 25 yarder into the corner of the net for the equaliser.

However two minutes later the Magpies regained the lead when Luke Tuttle received Aaron Kay's ball from the left and fired home under the keeper's body to put Dereham through to the next round.
