King's Lynn Town's season ending near 500-mile round trip to the Lancashire coast ended in a single goal defeat to promotion chasing AFC Fylde.

Captain Matt Blinkhorn's header, 17 minutes from time, ended the Linnets brave resistance in a game that was spoiled by a strong wind blowing across Kelamergh Park, handing his team a home Evo-Stik Premier Division play-off fixture with Worksop Town on Tuesday. The result sees Lynn in a respectable 11th place in the final league standings - a finish that has satisfied boss Gary Setchell.

He said: 'At the beginning of the season the tipsters were predicting mid-table so I suppose we have just about proven them wrong.'

However, the man who has overseen back to back promotions and FA Vase and Trophy runs in his tenure in The Walks hot seat will not be resting on his laurels as the summer break begins.

'The new season for begins tomorrow morning', quipped Setchell.

'We have already identified some targets we would like to bring to the club next season. I will be speaking with some of them shortly but I must stress that this will all be done within a budget set by the chairman. He (Buster Chapman) is not prepared to put the future of the club at risk and it's a position I respect.

'I enjoy the wheeler dealing of the close season, it's something I'm paid to do as that's my job. In the past it's unearthed some gems and I would like to think the same could happen this time round. We know the areas of the squad which we need to improve and its my ambition to achieve these improvements which could see us doing an Ashton United and surprising some people and securing a play-off spot.'

The Linnets played with much freedom in the match with the pressure seemingly affecting the high flying hosts. Early on the dangerous Danny Lloyd drilled wide from a tight angle and full back Caspar Hughes rippled Alex Street's side netting with Lynn replying with an Andrew Hall half chance.

The Coasters upped the anti in the second spell with Lloyd firing wide and Richie Allen forcing a point blank save from Street. Hall could have given the visitors a surprise lead but dribbled his shot wide. Blinkhorn finally settled home nerves with a back post, close range header from substitute's Michael Barnes centre but the Linnets nearly spoiled the best laid plans of the home sides as late subs Ewan Clarke and Jake Jones both failed to convert half chances, which their play for the afternoon more than deserved.
