Norfolk paceman Olly Stone’s memorable week reached a new high when he was named in the England Test squad to tour Sri Lanka this winter.

Former Thorpe St Andrew School pupil Stone, 24, was on Wednesday called into the England one-day international squad for the first time for next month’s tour of Sri Lanka.

Now the Warwickshire bowler has been named in the party for the three-match Test series, also in Sri Lanka, starting in November.

Batsmen Rory Burns and Joe Denly have also earned their first Test call-ups as England begin the search for a successor to Alastair Cook at the top of the order.

National selector Ed Smith said Stone’s form for Warwickshire had made an irresistible case for selection: “Olly Stone is an exciting talent who bowls with pace and skill,” Smith said.

“His 37 wickets in the county championship have come at an average of 12.27 and a strike rate of 22.22.”

Smith denied Burns and Denly would be under pressure to fill the gap left by the country’s leading run-scorer Cook, who retired from international cricket at the end of the current summer.

“I don’t really get hung up on the ‘next Alastair Cook’ narrative,” he added. “I don’t think that’s the way you select.”

England squad: Joe Root (Yorkshire, capt), Moeen Ali (Worcestershire), James Anderson (Lancashire), Jonny Bairstow (Yorkshire), Rory Burns (Surrey), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), Jos Buttler (Lancashire), Sam Curran (Surrey), Joe Denly (Kent), Keaton Jennings (Lancashire), Jack Leach (Somerset), Ollie Pope (Surrey), Adil Rashid (Yorkshire), Ben Stokes (Durham), Olly Stone (Warwickshire), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire).
