'They think it's all over... It is now' – Roy Hodgson's England will definitely be coming home from Brazil after their early World Cup exit was sealed following Costa Rica's surprise 1-0 win over Italy.

England's future in the tournament was left hanging by a thread after Luis Suarez inspired Uruguay to a 2-1 win in Sao Paulo on Thursday, condemning the Three Lions to a second successive deafeat following the 2-1 loss to Italy in Manaus – leaving them bottom of Group D.

Their fate was still in the balance last night until Bryan Ruiz's 44th minute header led Costa Rica to the win which sealed England's exit, signalling their worst performance in the tournament since 1958.

And some have been taking to Twitter to voice their disappointment.

@mrjakehumphrey – I thought I'd be happier if we'd matched #Spain after 2 games...

@manek43509 – Andros Townsend says England 'have world-class players in our side too'. Who, Andros? Who? #WorldCup

@LeighCurtis_NP – Sacking Roy is not the answer. We just don't have the players. As they say, you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

@craigdaniels82 – Give Patrick Viera the England job. Now.

@KathCanary – Who agrees that to help sort out England problem no club can have more than 2 non European players on the pitch at any one time?

@JmePizey – As the dust settles on @england exit from #WorldCup2014 , there must be a link to Robert Chase not signing Dean Windass for #NCFC
