East Anglia teams in Norfolk SRA Squash League title tussle
In the Norfolk SRA Squash League either East Anglia or East Anglia II will become Premier Division champions and it is looking increasingly likely that Diss will be relegated. However the four other teams could all finish anywhere from third to sixth in the table which should make for some exciting end-of-season matches.
East Anglia, who lead the table by four points, won 20-4 against Diss, who are in danger of being cast adrift at the bottom. Richard Hunt and Paul Gretton both won their matches in straight games while Nigel Gillick and John Cordeaux both won 3-1. The best match of the evening was the first string one where Dave Gouldby just did enough to beat Neil Cross 15-17 13-10 13-9 8-13 13-11.
The second team meanwhile were beating Broadland 20-2. Gary Snelling, Steve Mooney, Ian Douglas and Ashley Briggs all won their matches in straight games with Briggs, who was county junior champion back in 2004, having a particularly good 13-6 13-4 13-9 victory over Richard Millman. Two former county champions met in the first string match and David Youngs came out on top against Ian Cox winning 13-9 9-13 20-18 9-13 13-11.
One player doesn't make a team but the No.1 player in a squash team certainly helps. This was apparent this week as Sportspark, who were without their regular No.1 Andy Trim for the first time, lost their unbeaten record going down, with only four players, 16-10 to North Norfolk in Division One. Even so it was a close run thing since, in addition to the walk-over Jason Gollaglee beat Phil Brookington 3-2 and in the match of the evening captain Tim Perry just beat Eddie Webber 9-5 9-2 1-9 7-9 9-7.
For Sportspark both Joe Plumridge and Richard Fiske won their matches 3-1 against Peter Scott and Simon Watson respectively.
East Anglia III are still in with an outside chance of automatic promotion as they beat bottom club Cromer 19-6.
