Early goals settle the issue in Dereham Town’s favour

Two goals in the opening half an hour settled the issue in favour of Dereham Town.
David Hinton and Danny Beaumont put the Magpies in control and although the in-form visitors, who have pulled away from the foot of the table, pulled one back before half-time, the points stayed at Aldiss Park.
Dereham boss Matt Henman was able to name the same starting line-up that won at Cheshunt the previous week.
On a heavy surface, Dereham took the lead in the seventh minute with a well-worked goal – Rhys Logan’s cross to the far post was headed down by Joe Gatting to David Hinton who netted from close range.
Waltham keeper Lewis Lockyer then did well to block Gatting’s ball across goal to Beaumont.
But the Magpies continued to press and were rewarded again in the 21st minute when after a fine passing move Logan’s low drive was slid home at the far post by Beaumont.
Waltham’s first chances saw Romaric Logon cut inside from just outside the box and hit a low, goalbound drive that forced home keeper Josh Glover into an outstanding full-length save.
Minutes later Logon lifted the ball over the home defence to Darrell Russell who fired over when well placed.
The Essex side began to have more of the play, pushing Dereham deep into their own half, and they scored on 37 minuutes when the ball was played to the overlapping Joyner on the left and the full-back chipped an inviting ball towards the penalty spot where Billy Holland headed home.
It could have been level at the break, but Michael Spencer’s 20-yard left-footer was inches over.
Dereham brought on Jay Eastoe-Smith at the break and he was immediately required to head a Joyner centre behind goal. From the corner Logon headed off target from point-blank range.
Dereham replied with Myron Abodunde’s long ball finding Gatting who progressed before having his right-foot effort saved by advancing keeper Lockyer.
The Magpies won a free kick on the left and the stretching Eastoe-Smith looped Beaumont’s centre off target.
Waltham’s Russell and Logon were both denied at close range by Glover as the visitors searched for the equaliser.
However, Dereham nearly increased their advantage in the 68th minute when Logan’s centre from the right struck the bar. Minutes later Logan had a low left-foot drive saved by Lockyer before Gatting turned well outside the box and fired just over the bar.
In the final minutes Waltham pressed hard but Dereham remained resilient to record a welcome home win.
