Joe Skipper's hopes of a top-five finish at the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii fell apart after having to push too hard on the bike leg in Kona.

The 28-year-old Norwich athlete, who broke the British Ironman record this year, was the 42nd male professional to finish.

He completed the 2.4-mile swim in 54.11 minutes but the 112-mile cycle in 04:49.58 hours, leaving him well down the field.

The Lowestoft-raised athlete then finished off with a marathon (26.2 miles) time of 3:34.14 hours for a total time of 09:25.07 – almost 90 minutes short of his British record.
