Hopes of an all-Norfolk clash in the final of the Ridgeons League Cup disappeared at the weekend when Dereham Town were beaten 3-1 at home by Stanway Rovers in the semi-finals.

The visitors, who will now face Norwich United at Diss on May 7, wasted a good chance in the 12th minute when Mark Maher miscued his shot with only Shaun Marshall to beat.

Stanway made their pressure pay in the 20th minute when Maher headed Michael Cheek's chip into the box on to Ben Newson who turned his man before coolly slotting the ball under Marshall.

The visitors continued to press but the game changed in the 29th minute when Stanway fullback Josh Gould was sent off for a two footed challenge on Aaron Burt. As Dereham looked for the equaliser Luke Tuttle fired an overhead effort just off target but they drew level in the 43rd minute when a curling Gary Starling free-kick was turned into his own net by a defender.

Stanway restored their lead in the 52nd minute with a superb strike from Cheek who exchanged passes with Ben Newson before thumping home a low volley. Sam Borrer came close to an equaliser in the 70th minute when his well executed volley clipped the underside of the bar. The visitors then made a quick break and after Gary Starling had made a goal line block Cheek netted at the second attempt to give his side a two goal cushion.
