Dereham Town boss Matt Henman believes home comforts can help his side enjoy an extended run in the FA Cup this season.

The Magpies welcome United Counties League S&L Corby to Aldiss Park on Saturday as they look to progress from the extra preliminary round and pocket 1,000 prize money.

With a home tie against Northamptonshire Step Four outfit Woodford United – who play one level above Dereham and Corby – awaiting the winners on August 25, Henman is looking for a good performance, and a victory, come 3pm.

The Magpies boss said: 'The FA Cup has been a bit of a disappointment for us recently, although we've had some success, because we've had some really tough ties.

'This year the draw has been a bit kinder, we have a few winnable games and they're at home too. Everybody knows about the FA Cup and it's an opportunity to get a bit of local interest.

'It's a good chance to get a bit of exposure, it might attract a few new supporters, and it's good that if we get through we get another home draw.

'It would be a boost for us competitively, and financially, if we had a good run. There's a good confidence and togetherness about us and if we work hard and concentrate on ourselves – on our own pitch – and fulfil our responsibilities I see no reason why we shouldn't win.'

Henman was delighted at the weekend as his side's Thurlow Nunn Premier Division programme got off to a flying start at Felixstowe & Walton United.

Striker Shaun Bamment scored on his competitive debut for the Magpies and Luke Hannant also found the net as Dereham enjoyed a 2-0 victory.

Henman said: 'The result and performance was excellent. Our new players bedded in really well and hit the ground running.

'Shaun scored on his debut and was excellent. He deserved his goal and made a difference to us. We probably could have scored a few more goals but I was happy with the fitness of the players, their work-rate, and the fact that we came through the game without any injuries.'

Scott Sutherland-Gray will miss the weekend's FA Cup tie as will suspended duo Jay Eastoe-Smith and Luke Tuttle. The pair will sit out the last game of their three-match ban on Tuesday night when Dereham welcome last season's Premier Division runners-up Ely City (7.45pm). Henman said: 'Ely will be there or thereabouts this season so it's going to be a tough game. I'd rather get them out of the way though and we did really well against them last season so I'm looking forward to it.'
