Dearnley and Holmes keep rivals at bay

The sudden, and welcome, arrival of mild weather combined with a good breeze must have encouraged the crews to come out at Rollesby, where the Assymetrics appeared in force for the three multi-sail races.
That, however, was where their joy ended, as Peter Dearnley and Di Holmes raced their very traditional- style Wayfarer to three clear wins on handicap, although it wasn't quite as easy as that. A port start in the first race saw them well away with only Ian Ayres and Sharron Allen in Laser 2000 anywhere near. It sufficed to give them victory after keeping fellow Wayfarer sailors Val and Chris Hansen under control in a largely processional race, with the wind blowing across the broad. Derek Page and Gil Stephenson led the assymetrics in.
The second race saw Roger Wilson and Dennis Manning, who had disentangled their rigging, force Dearnley into a stall at the start, but unfortunately spoiling the effect by stalling themselves. Ayres made the best of it to get away but, bearing away shortly afterwards they fell foul of the Hansens, who suffered minor damage while Ayres saw a torn spinnaker and jammed bowsprit, and perforce retired.
Meanwhile Wilson and Dearnley made the most of it, finishing in that order but again Wilson could not save his time. The third race saw something of a war zone at the windward mark as Dearnley and Ayres clashed, happily without damage, and Dearnley went on to score his hat-trick. Meanwhile in the single handers Lawrence Milton won the first race despite impaling his mainsail on a horizontally placed mast of a capsized RS200. That was the good news. In the following contest a shroud parted on the last lap. A quick gybe saved both his mast and his dignity but finished his day as Stuart Highfield took the race in his Laser while Tim Clancy belied his years with excellent strong wind sailing to take second spot. The last race was for the hardiest only and saw a win for Dave Murphy.

A fair wind, building up as they came to St Benets, sped the fleet on the run and reach downstream. Peter Marriott and Bob McKean were the early pace-setters and led until a sudden gust caught their spinnaker causing them to broach and run up the bank. By the time they recovered the other six had passed them, with Ian Hansen and Q Stewart leading Bernie Westgate and Andrew Fryer to the finish, Hansen winning by 14 seconds over the 80 minute race, and the rest coming in within four minutes.
The return beat saw Marriott and McKean on top, beating Westgate and Fryer by 12 seconds. Snowflakes wind up their programme this Sunday with their End of Season regatta.
t Frostbites suffered from Mothers Day, only seven boats turning out, and of those five merely played a supporting role to the Tims brothers.
Ian and Mike started the first race over the line, but quickly recovered to move effortlessly ahead and clock up victory by three minutes over Ray Johnson and Wendy Bush, who managed eventually to get the better of Jonathan Tyrrell.
The second race was to the site of the former power station, and again team Tims ran away on the run upstream to win the Breydon Challenge Cup by almost eight minutes from Tyrrell.
t There are three funeral/memorial services today and tomorrow.
This afternoon, at 2pm, a memorial service will be held at St Peter Mancroft for Phillip Davies, a long term keen member of NBYC, who died earlier this year. Tomorrow, James Dunham's funeral will be held at 1pm at Horning Parish Church. James was for many years a member of NBYC and Horning, sailing mainly keelboats. As previously mentioned, Di Murland's memorial service will be held at Wroxham Parish Church, at 2.30pm tomorrow.
Sadly, I have to report the sudden death, a week ago, of Chris Wilson.
Chris and his family were members of NBYC and Frostbites for many years, and well known and liked particularly in the Cruiser and Norfolk classes, sailing Goldfish and Harnser.
Arguably Chris was more successful sailing Goldfish, but throughout his Norfolk Dinghy sailing career he faced substantial opposition in the shape of sailors such as Martin Broom, Raymond Jeckells, Ian Macintosh, and David Mackley. Nevertheless he won the Mackintosh Mug for the Rum Punch Sunday and Boxing Day races outright with wins in 1963, 1966, 1967 and 1970. His funeral will take place at Yelverton Church on Friday, March 26, at 2.30pm.
t Sir Peter Dixon, a long-term owner in the River Cruiser class, with Bryony and currently Cirrus, has been appointed to The Broads Authority.
