Darren Ferguson hailed his heroes as Peterborough United saw off brave Chesterfield to win their first Johnstone's Paint Trophy final.

First-half goals from loanee Josh McQuoid and Shaun Brisley put the London Road club in control at Wembley.

Eoin Doyle reduced the arrears in a second half which saw Joe Newell sent off for violent conduct. However, Britt Assombalonga struck a late penalty to ease any nerves and help the 10 men triumph on their maiden visit to the rebuilt stadium.

The son of managerial great Sir Alex Ferguson, who watched on from the stands, said: 'You enjoy Wembley when you win. It's a fantastic feeling. It's a proud day for my family.

'I might not ever get back here as a manager. The one thing we're good at is winning big games. This is up there (in my career). Cup finals at Wembley don't often come around and to win one is fantastic. I'm pleased for my staff and my players.'

Posh's most successful manager of all time will give his players today off to celebrate their win but admits he'll be having a few words with his player who nearly ruined the big day by getting red carded.

Ferguson added: 'It was the easiest decision the referee had to make all day. It was a foolish thing to do. But he's only a young lad. I will have a serious conversation with him because it could have cost us the game.'
