Rollesby geared themselves up for their three winter series at the weekend with their Autumn Regatta and Enterprise Woodcock salver Meeting.

They do seem to have problems with the co-incidence of the weather and their programme. Last year their Autumn Series climaxed throughout December, and this time they greeted autumn in T shirts and shorts!

The six Enterprises contesting the Woodcock Salver was way below the 40 plus when the contest was inaugurated by Tim Woodcock, local chairman of the Enterprise Class 50 years ago, but even then Brian Cumming was already a leading competitor, sailing against such luminaries as Robert Self, Martin Broom, and yours truly helping to make up the numbers.

Half a century on, he must be one of the oldest Enterprise sailors, and, now crewed by wife Linda, has lost none of his skill as they almost effortlessly won the first race from locals Chris Mann and Heather Vaughan.

For the second race Kevin and Elena Edwards got their act together and a close battle followed with them and the Cummings changing places frequently but giving Cumming his second win. A navigational error by Cumming in the third race let the rest through and Edwards' win secured him runner-up spot.

Val and Chris Hanson used their spinnaker to good effect in the eight-strong multi-sail fleet which they dominated, with fellow Wayfarer sailors Bob Sparrrow and Tony Gibbs coming second. The single handers were dominated by the five Solos, and, in another hard fought contest, Roger Wilson eventually edged home in the last race to keep John Saddington and Ian Hanson at bay.

On Wroxham Broad 15 Yeomans basked in the sunshine and a light southerly as Carl Brady and Guy Colman won three of their four races to take the Wilson Cup, with James Dugdale and James Patience their nearest rivals counting two seconds and two thirds. Third placed Steve Cliffe won the third race, while Roger and Paul Claxton, after taking second and third guns on Saturday, slipped down to fifth overall behind Chris Hanson.

NBYC hosted the second leg of the annual team match against Frostbites in two necessarily short races dictated by the lack of wind. The hosts won by 10 points, enough to counter their six-point disadvantage from the first leg in March.

Hickling's Olympic Course day drew 30 competitors revelling in the sun and a Force 3 southwesterly. Marion Bown won the Allcomers series (excluding Allcomers C) in her Soloi, while the Koch brothers won the Allcomers C in their Gull.
