Blackdyke

It's been another good week at Blackdyke, with lots of free rising fish. Hoppers, daddies and small lures are all working well.

Iain Barr had 13 to the net on Saturday and a nice one of 4lb 4oz, but he was out-done by Hywel Morgan on Sunday with a nice rainbow of 6lb 5oz, caught on a hopper and safely returned. Blackdyke have a Hardy greys day on Sunday.

Eyebrook tackle shop will be in attendance – come along and try their range of rods. Instructor Tim Gaunt Baker will be on hand to answer any casting questions – refreshments are available.

With the cooler weather the fish are deeper in the mornings and can be taken on small lures and gold-head nymphs, such as gold-rib hares ear and cats whisker.

Emergers will do the trick in the afternoons with the fish rising to the top again or with small nymphs using a slow figure of eight retrieve just under the surface.

Best results this week went to Sean Middleton with 11 fish caught to 3lb on his first visit to the fishery. The biggest fish this week was around the 10lb mark, returned unharmed, which was caught on a gold-head marabou damsel. Another good beginners course took place with all participants catching.

Consistent figures in the catch returns book mean that the fishing recently has really come into its own. Both rainbows and browns have been stocking up ready for winter and the surface action has been a sight to behold, even on brighter, sunny days.

With an abundance of sedge and upwings still hatching off, fly selection has been tricky. The fish are certainly not deep and anything fished more than two feet from the surface will usually be ignored.

Nick Spriggs, from London, had an enjoyable first visit to RMF last week when he fished an evening session.

He landed a total of eight fish, including two brown trout averaging 4lb each. Nick was using a size 14 RMF tied sedge pattern and casting to rises – takes were coming as soon as the fly landed.

All manner of flies have been working recently, with any small dries worth a punt. Failing that, natural or olive hares ear nymphs and crunchers are the next best thing.

Willow Lakes

The trout at Willow Lakes are still taking buzzer nymphs on the surface all day so it's still floating lines and hares ear and buzzer nymphs plus daddies fished dry. Make the most of the good fishing as we close on October 31.
