Goalkeeper Danny Gay is convinced he can bring more clean sheets to King's Lynn Town after completing his return to The Walks.

The much-travelled shot-stopper rejoined his hometown team, who he played for before the original club was wound up in the High Court in 2009, on Thursday.

And the 30-year-old wants to set about improving on Lynn's record of two shut-outs in nine matches this season – starting today at Mickleover Sports.

Gay said: 'It's good to be back. I'm really pleased that I'm able to return. And hopefully I can improve the side and help us look to gain promotion.

'I definitely want to make a big presence behind the back four. I think that's why the manager (Gary Setchell) has bought me in. He knows what I'm capable of. I've played at this level for a couple of years now and I've played at the level above and won leagues at that level too.

'I'm expecting to come in, obviously there's new players, and bed myself in with them. I expect within a week or so they'll understand what I expect from them and visa-versa. Hopefully the transition is quite easy because I'm quite easy to get on with.

'We need to get back to keeping clean sheets at this football club. You can't give teams two-goal headstarts and expect to win games. I'll be looking to try and tighten things up at my end and hopefully the lads can keep scoring at the other end like they have been doing.'

Lynn have scored nine goals in their last four games in all competitions –but also shipped eight. Their two clean sheets this term came at home in league matches against Chasetown on the opening day and Carlton Town earlier this month.

Gay, who rejoined Lynn from AFC Sudbury, arrives back at The Walks with a fearsome reputation having dropped into the non-league game following spells with Norwich City and Southend United.

The PE teacher believes he has unfinished business with the Tennyson Avenue outfit after being one of just three players to stay with Lynn until their doors were shut due to an unpaid tax bill of more than 65,000 almost three years ago.

'It's not strange coming back as I see it as a new football club,' said Gay, who made 11 Football League appearances for Southend.

'When Heggsy (Carl Heggs, manager at the time) was here and Chinny (Michael Chinn, director at the time) and that there was silly money being thrown at the football club.

'People were being paid ridiculous money for this level of football and now it's a proper football club, which is run properly by the chairman (Buster Chapman).

'Obviously it's taken a couple of years for them to get up to the next level and hopefully, this season if not next, we can get promoted to a level which I feel that the town deserves this club to be at.

'I said in the press at the time (2009) that I felt we had a side good enough to win that league. In the end, Guiseley won it (Unibond Premier Division), and we went there and beat them very comfortably, so there's definitely unfinished business for me.

'This is my hometown. I've always said I would come back eventually. Maybe it's a bit sooner than I expected. But when the manager spoke to me about coming it ticked all the boxes.'

Gay is likely to replace Alex Street – who appears set for a loan move to Holbeach United – for Lynn's Evo-Stik Division One South game at the Derbyshire outfit this afternoon.

Setchell's side have no injury worries and sit second going into the match. Mickleover are 12th.
