Civil Service 62, Diss 5

With a squad down to the bare bones, Diss travelled for another long and gruelling battle against a faster and well drilled side.

The result was never in doubt from the first few minutes, when the home side scored two quick tries. As hard as they tried, problems caused by more injuries meant Diss were never going to get back into the game.

The pack played well and matched their counterparts, but the backs were outplayed by a bigger, faster and slick Civil Service back line.

Diss were missing captain Matt Richards, the Hall Brothers, Pete Bray, Aarron Bliss and Charlie Precious – though Mark Prior, Dale Gooderham and Giles West came back into the squad.

There was a steady progression of five tries in the first half – not helped by prop Tim Groom being injured early on and having to be substituted – followed by another five in the second half.

Groom had to return because of further front row injury and was rewarded for his bravery and devotion to the cause when he managed to cross the line for a consolation try. He will not, however, be available this weekend, when further injuries to John Llewellyn (shoulder) and Matt Briggs will make selection for the game at Gravesend problematical for the coaching staff.
