Former Peterborough United youngster Charlie Butt could make his debut for King's Lynn Town this afternoon.

The versatile teenager, who is comfortable in defence or midfield, looks set to be in the Linnets squad for today's home clash with Rainworth Miners Welfare.

Butt, 18, only signed for his hometown club yesterday after being released by the Championship club. However, Lynn boss Gary Setchell insists the deal to sign the Lynn lad on a 'work experience' deal until the end of the season can benefit everyone involved immediately.

Setchell said: 'The paying public like to see a local lad. They did it with Sam Mulready and they'll do it with Charlie. If local lads do well the fans will love them.

'He's coming in and he's got a chance to get some experience and games. Obviously we've got a good squad so he'll have to fight his way into the team but it's a good opportunity for him.

'Peterborough released him because they don't think he's going to make the grade but we're a million miles from the Championship.

'His problem might have been that he's so versatile he's struggled to hold down a position. But his versatility can help us. He's a fit boy, who can play a bit, and he's been taught well. It was a no-brainer to bring him here.'

The right-sided player, whose father Mark used to play for Lynn, spent five years with the Posh until his departure in January. St Neots Town thought they had convinced him to join them and Setchell concedes his spell at The Walks may not be a long one.

The Lynn boss said: 'I'm under no illusions. Charlie, like Sam (Mulready, now back at Gainsborough) and George (Thomson) still want to make the grade. If I signed Charlie and he said he wanted to play for King's Lynn for the next 10 years I'd ask him where is ambition is.

'He's 18, just been released by a Championship side and still believe he's good enough to make it. If he comes in and does well we will be interested. But if say a Conference club wants to take him I'd probably shake his hand and say 'thanks' and then follow his career from there. I hope he does well for us and enjoys it here but let's let him play first and see how he gets on.'
