Sixteen year-old Declan Davis (CC Breckland) has had a great week – with two wins in one day plus a personal best in mid-week.

The PB was in the East Anglian CC 10 on the Morley to Wymondham and back course where Davis recorded 21:29. Jim Burgess (Anglia Velo) was men's winner in 20:06 while top lady was Nikki Hawkes (Velo Velocity, 23:38).

Burgess' team-mate Chris Roberts (22:42, plus 6:10) beat him by just 12 seconds in the Best Veteran on Standard list. Weather was good, but Marcos Janes' comment, 'a strange evening', seems the best summary of hard-to-pin-down conditions – but the VC Norwich rider nevertheless PB-ed by 19 seconds to finish in 23:31.

Watton rider Davis' double came when he won his own club's open 10 on the course near Hingham used last year for the National Championship. On a warm but breezy afternoon he won in 22:44, ahead of Richard Carrington (Mildenhall CC, 23:20) and Davis' clubmate Louis Gyde (23:21). In the morning Davis had teamed up with grandfather Don Saunders and sister's boyfriend Harvey Hall to win the Victoria CC Three-Up team time trial on the steeped-in-history Old 32nd course based at Ugley in Essex.

Andrew Leggett of the Stowmarket club won the VC Baracchi 50 on the Waveney Valley course in 1:55:22. Second was North Walsham rider John Swindells (Iceni Velo, 1:57:15) who described the conditions as, 'a perfect morning weather-wise, cool and still' though a few people still managed to complain of having a headwind the whole way around.

Jim Burgess, previously thought of as a short distance specialist, seems to have acquired a taste for 100-mile events – he put in a 3:47:38 ride in the Eastern Counties 100 between Newport (Essex) and Newmarket, in which Norwich ABC's Gina Bertoldi did 5:14:40.

There are great opportunities for young riders and novice seniors to get into bike racing at the Lotus test circuit at Hethel, as the Lotus Cycle Race League moves to Youth and Novice racing for the next four weeks, while Wednesday senior racing goes to Trinity Park, Ipswich.

Age groups at Lotus start with the Under 8s, where Cam Hansell was the winner, and go up to Under 16, where Patrick Manning (Gt Yarmouth CC) was the winner. Each week there are two short races for each age group. There are also separate races for novice women and men. Go to www.lotuscycleracing.org/ to register, and to print off the indemnity form and bring it, appropriately signed, to Hethel – but otherwise races are entry-on-the-day, each Wednesday evening up to and including July 16.
