Fakenham recorded the surprise result of the day as the first round of the Carter Cup was finally completed at the weekend.

The Cecil Amey Norfolk Alliance Premier Division side saw off last season's beaten finalists Norwich by two wickets to prevent a clean sweep of wins by teams from the Gibbs Denley East Anglian Premier League.

Without skipper Ashley Watson, who was on Norfolk duty, Norwich were all out for 185 and although Fakenham slipped to 61-7 in reply an eighth wicket partnership of 106 between Luke Caswell (72 not out) and Lloyd Marshall (45) set up a notable home win.

EAPL sides Swardeston, Vauxhall Mallards and Horsford all joined Great Witchingham - who had beaten the rain and North Runcton the previous weekend - in the last eight.

Holders Swardeston were given a good run for their money by Cromer before edging home by two wickets chasing a total of 195. David Turner was the star the visitors, making 96 in a superb innings that included 13 fours. Frankie Sutton then took 5-32 for the underdogs, but it was not quite enough.

Opener Jeremy Elliott top scored with 71 for the hosts while young paceman Tom Oxley helped see them over the line with an unbeaten 21 after earlier taking 4-33.

Mallards beat Old Buckenham by six wickets after restricting the Alliance side to 210-6, with South African batsman Nicholas Smit s unfortunate to be left stranded on 99 not out.

Horsford saw off Acle, finishing on 234-5 in reply to the Alliance outfit's 231-7.

Completing the draw for the second round, which will be made live on Radio Norfolk this evening, are Downham Town, Brooke and Martham.

Downham (205-2) beat Bradfield (204) by eight wickets, with Harrison Gregory leading the victory charge with an unbeaten 90, while Brooke had the most comfortable win of the day, seeing off Sprowston by 236 runs after piling up a daunting total of 378-7. Ali Shearer (138) and Sam Clabburn (133) put on 210 for the fourth wicket.

Martham won the battle of the Alliance Division Two sides to reach the quarter-finals as they beat Mattishall by six wickets after bowling them out for 216, with Alex Sayer making 133.
