After a really good pre-season which saw us enjoy a mixed bag of results, but gain some great fitness, I have to start on a low point – Stuart Wall.

Although the severity of Wally's injury isn't clear yet it doesn't look great and everybody at the club is gutted for him. I know from the little bits I have seen and how highly the gaffer (Gary Setchell) and lads rate Stu, he is going to be a massive loss on the pitch, so I and the boys wish him a speedy recovery.

It's never easy moving clubs, but I personally have felt it has been spot on from day one at King's Lynn since I arrived in the close season and I put that all down to the boys.

To a man everybody has welcomed all the new lads into the changing room, which is great given that there may have been a rivalry or two in the past, what with me, Dunks (Dunkley) and Quigz (Quigley) being at Long Buckby.

I'm not going to lie, though; it's been hard work, the running's killed me, but it has to be done and the banter has got me through. There are some jokers in the changing room, not to mention a few moaners as well.

Watto (Watson) and Spriggsy (Spriggs) might just be the front runners. I will let you decide which is which, although you should take into account that Spriggsy has a mouth bigger than Ross's!

As mentioned earlier, the results from pre-season were up and down and even though it's nice to win all your games it's all about getting fit and being prepared for the start of the season.

When new players come into any team it takes time for people to get to know everyone's game. It's also about the gaffer experimenting with different formations and trying to find a system that works best for the team. So with all that taken into account I think we had a good summer.

That said, there is nothing better than the opening day of any season and this one was made even better with it being at The Walks on Saturday – my first competitive game as a home player.

It just so happened to be on the hottest day of the year and I can tell you it felt like the pitch was on the sun. This and probably a few nerves reflected in the first-half performance which felt, and by the sounds of things looked, scrappy, but I thought the second-half display was totally different.

Maybe it was down to how hard everybody has worked pre-season because we seemed stronger than they did. It also helps having the two giants at either end of the pitch, Dunks and Gullers (Gulliver) who I thought were both different class.

And when we needed that spark Spriggsy came on and gave us it. Opening days are all about one thing and that's getting off to a decent start. The three points have given us a platform to build on which hopefully we did at Hucknall on Tuesday (I'm writing this on Monday).

Although we have waited for what seems forever for the league to start we quickly switch our attention to the FA Cup on Saturday. It's a great competition to be part of and gives you a chance to play against much higher opposition.

But first we have to deal with Wellingborough, who, being a level lower, will love to turn us over I'm sure. For me it's like a home game with only having to travel 20 minutes to get there, but the lads know we will have to turn up on the day and earn the right to make it into the hat for the next round.

It's going to be a very busy Bank Holiday with Monday's game (home to Brigg Town) as well. Two games in three days will be a big ask, but this season isn't about 11 players.

We have a good squad and whoever plays will do a job for the team so let's hope this weekend sees us with more points on the board and a place in the next round of the cup.
