We wanted to put in a performance for the gaffer on Saturday and I think we did just that.

We all agreed last week that any way we could show our support for him publically we would, be it through me in this column, or players posting their backing for him on Twitter. But we knew we had to show it on the pitch too.

We want him as our manager. Even though we haven't won the league it doesn't matter. He's the right man to be in charge and we wanted to get a result for him.

We let him and the fans down with our performance in the 1-1 draw with Desborough. So on Saturday we had something to prove to the gaffer that we want to be here and help the club progress.

It was a shame to concede, especially to a penalty that I thought was soft, but we scored three great goals and got the job done in pretty horrible conditions.

We had one eye on Long Buckby's result, hoping they would slip up, but we didn't expect it. I went to the game when they hammered Blackstones 11-1 and I found it so hard to watch.

To play football you need to show commitment and yes, sometimes, you come up short. But to concede 11 goals at any level makes me feel you need to take a look at yourself in the mirror.

Fair play to Buckby, though, you can only beat what's put in front of you, but I think you could see how much that result disheartened us.

Teams always play their best 90 minutes against us, like Boston Town for example. We beat them 2-1 and 1-0, then drew 1-1 in the rearranged game, while they lost 7-1 to Buckby.

It's frustrating, but at the end of the day we can only blame ourselves for coming runners-up. To get 106 points though and still come second, again, has left a lot of us scratching our heads.

I've never kept a medal, even a winner's one, because things like that don't bother me. I prefer to see things in the history books so when I sit down at the age of 35 or so and look back at what I've achieved I can see it there in black and white.

I especially don't want a medal if it's a runners-up one, so I gave mine away to a fan. In my eyes it's a little gift to say thanks for all the support we've had this season. It's just a shame I couldn't give the woman a winner's one.

We've heard this week that we might still get promoted to Step Four, and I'd love to be a part of that side if we do, but I still wish if we get there we'd have done it by being champions.

If you take Jack (Defty), Turns (Jason Turner) and Danny White out of our team, everyone else is basically 25 and under. We're young and we've got lots more football in us, but coming second hurts.

We came up short at the final hurdle and we're gutted. But the gaffer said in the dressing room on Saturday that we need to re-group and go again.

He said it's been a tremendous season and he's honoured to manage us. We're honoured to play for him. And hopefully we can now get some silverware.

I've always said the league is our priority and anything else is a bonus. Despite that I never want to come second and I only enjoy football, and things in general, when I'm winning.

Now there probably is a bit more pressure on us to pick up some silverware on Monday in the cup final against St Ives. They're no mugs though. We've beaten them twice, 5-1 at home, but it was one of them nights where it all went for us – including a ref who gave us everything.

Conor Washington has scored goals and they've got quality players in their side but we need to worry about ourselves. We're desperate go out with a bang and give the fans who go to Yaxley on Monday – like the great ones who went to Cogenhoe – something to cheer.
