Beccles travelled to Holt for their final pre-season fixture, to play the side who won London Division 3NE last season – and left with a 25-10 defeat.

Coach Keith Rix took the opportunity to try some new combinations in the four-quarter format, however from the start the match was competitive.

Luke Wade slotted a mid-range penalty to give the Bulls a 3-0 lead, but Holt played for territory and were able to force errors which pinned Beccles into their 22.

The hosts were rewarded with a well taken try from their number eight Woods, following a blind side move.

Two further tries followed as Beccles struggled to get to grips with the clinical decision-making of the experienced Holt fly-half Youngs.

In the second half Beccles piled on the pressure but often took the wrong option when in sight of the try line, allowing Holt to clear their lines.

Eventually a sustained spell of pressure led to Tris Holtzer forcing his way over to score his first try for the club.

The Bulls were then in full flow with man of the match Chris Frost making inroads and Marcus Sale having an effective game, showing real power in attack.

Holt showed why they lost only two games last season with impressive defence to deny the Bulls the further score they probably deserved.

The hosts scored a penalty late on to round off a solid team effort.

An encouraging performance from Beccles, however improved decision-making and a more clinical set piece will be required in the upcoming series of league matches.

The Bulls are at home next week against East London, the fixture was scheduled to be played away however the East London pitch has been used as parking for the Paralympics and needs time to recover.

A lunch will be held before the game as the Bulls are hoping for a strong show of support.
