Many people hold an ambition to run a marathon in their lifetime but not many people could ever imagine running 75 of the 26-mile races.

That is exactly what Bob Jack has managed, as he has travelled the globe to tackle some of the most famous endurance races on the planet.

The 54-year-old from Broome, near Bungay, will not be among the thousands taking part in the London Marathon tomorrow though. The Bungay Black Dog Running Club member is heading to Austria for marathon number 76 of his lifetime.

Vienna is Jack's next destination on his impressive globe-trotting itinerary. That follows his 75th marathon in Italy at the end of last month, completing the Rome Marathon despite struggling with a calf injury.

'I have been plodding around marathons off and on since 1982, when I did the first Bungay Marathon,' the Norfolk Community and Health Care Trust IT trainer explained.

'I would like to do 100, no more than that! Now I'm starting to tick off the European capitals, I think its inevitable I'll do the rest – Athens, Lisbon, Brussels, Budapest, Stockholm etcetera – but some are on the same day so you can only do one at a time.

'Weighing around 17 stone, I am not the fastest marathon runner in the world, but I always finish. I've also done 143 half marathons, 131 10km events and over 150 other assorted distance races.'

There's no easing up in Jack's marathon efforts easier. Next month he intends to run numbers 77 and 78 in Prague, in the Czech Republic, and Luxembourg. He also intends to compete in the Dublin Marathon in October.

When he started his international marathon running, Jack was working and living in Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

Adelaide in Australia was his first in 1985, before stopping for fish and chips during the Auckland Marathon in New Zealand the following year.

That same year, aged 26, Jack set his personal best of three hours 56 minutes in Rotorua in New Zealand.

He saw runners stop for a cigarette during marathons in Japan, enjoyed a couple of glasses of red wine during the Paris Marathon in France in 2009 and taken in many other European capitals.

'I have visited 130 countries around the world – travelling is my passion,' Jack added. 'I use the European marathons as an excuse to take Wendy, my partner, to visit European cities she has never been to.'
