David Wagner has walked in Angus Gunn’s shoes and is backing the Norwich City keeper to be a hit with Scotland.

Gunn switched allegiance to represent the Tartan Army after playing for England at age group level.

The 27-year-old has been a stand out performer for the Canaries in a difficult Championship season, and could make his international bow in Saturday’s Euro2024 qualifier against Cyprus, before Spain visit Hampden Park next week.

Club boss Wagner featured for Germany as a player at youth level but went on to earn his senior spurs with the USA.

“The difference is that Angus is a much better player than I was,” joked the City chief. “There was a similarity for me. I played for the German youth without any chance to get a call up for the German ‘A’ team.

"Then there popped up a chance for me to play for America. I wanted to grab this chance to play international football and to get this experience.

"I haven't spoken with Angus in detail for what his thoughts are, but for sure to play international games, maybe with a chance to play a big tournament as well, is interesting. A big credit to him. I know from what I've seen in every training session he deserved it.

“I think he has everything. If I look back on his last five, six weeks he has made massive improvements since I arrived in the building. He looks very mature, very calm. He makes great saves as well and has kept clean sheets.

"I'm very happy with him and his performances and hopefully he will continue. There is not a shadow of a doubt that he has everything to take this next step. I'm very pleased for him and his family and for us as a football club as well that we have a further international in our squad. We will see what the future brings.”

Gunn signed off with a solo show in the 0-0 Championship draw at Stoke.

“Stoke had three or four very good opportunities where you need your goalkeeper on your best and this was the case,” said Wagner. “Apart from these situations he looked very calm, very focused, very concentrated in picking up crosses and with his feet he was very confident as well.

"I'm very happy for him that he got this call up but I'm very happy for Scotland as well. They have a very, very good goal keeper at this point. A proper goal keeper.”
