Thetford Town Council are proposing a number of measures to prevent illegal encampments and vehicles accessing the commons. They Council are proposing the following:-
BARNHAM CROSS AND MELFORD COMMON
Thetford Town Council has applied to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for consent under section 38 of the Commons Act 2006/section 23(2) to carry out restricted works on Barnham Cross and Melford Common. The Planning Inspectorate will decide the application on behalf of the Secretary of State.

• Resurfacing, mounding and ditching of the large Barnham Cross Carpark as well as the installation of bollards and barriers to prevent unauthorised caravan and lorry access.
• Resurfacing, mounding and ditching of the medium sized Barnham Cross Carpark as well as the installation of bollards and barriers to prevent unauthorised caravan and lorry access.
• Installation of a gate to prevent vehicle access at the small carpark on Barnham Cross Common.
• Mounding and ditching at Melford Common as well as the installation of bollards and barriers to prevent unauthorised caravan and lorry access.
