Wymondham Rugby Football Club will not go ahead with plans to build an artificial grass pitch as part of its new grounds, which is under construction at a site just east of the town.

The club had originally planned to build a 3G all-weather pitch at its new site, but changed it plans after South Norfolk Council announced it wanted to build one at Kett's Park, a plan which was approved by a council committee earlier this week.

A rugby club spokesman said: 'These pitches are very expensive to build and run and it is clear that two pitches so close together would not have been viable so all the pitches at our new home will now be grass. Ground work and extensive drainage will mean that these natural surfaces should be playable in all but the most extreme conditions.

'The Kett's Park pitch won't unfortunately be suitable for competitive rugby games, but we do hope that our players will be able to use it for training sessions and we very much welcome the provision of better sporting facilities for Wymondham.'
