A charity shop in a Norfolk town is set to honour their long serving volunteers after seven of them amassed over 130 years service between them.

And the efforts of Joyce Reynolds, Edna Andrews, Brenda Chenery, Jill Clarke, Lillian Mortimer, Valerie Gowthrop and Diana Mutimer were celebrated at the Children's Society in Wymondham on Thursday, which has re-opened following a refit.

The shop, which opened in Market Street 19 years ago, has undergone a refurbishment to include improvements to the ceiling lights while the rest of the store has been brightened up.

The store specialises in men's and women's clothing, toys, games, books and haberdashery with proceeds going to the Society, which was set up in 1881 to help disabled children, runaway children and refugee children.

The charity has 90 shops across the country and also organises campaigns and lobbies the government on children's issues.

Mrs Andrews, 85, who lives in Marion Close, Wymondham has been a volunteer at the shop for the last 16 years.

She said: 'Primarily, it is about helping the children to live better lives, but also it is about having the company of the other volunteers, especially when you are living on your own. It is the company and atmosphere of the place.'

Her husband Tarachand died 32 years ago and she works three days a week at the shop and said knowing that her efforts were going to help children made her happy.

The seven are due to receive vases from the charity in recognition of their efforts.
