The arts organisation, which is based at the Grade I-listed Dragon Hall in King Street, is one of 16 organisations across the country that have been invited to apply for money from the Arts Council's capital funding programme.

Writers' Centre Norwich has already been awarded an initial grant of £110,566, and has now been told it can apply for a further £789,434.

If its bid is successful the money will be used to support Writers' Centre Norwich's plans to develop a National Centre for Writing at Dragon Hall. The plans include building a new wing and developing the existing space to create a new writers' residence, an events space, learning spaces and better digital resources.

Hedley Swain, Arts Council England's south east area director, said: 'Writers' Centre Norwich is in a really exciting period in its development and the move to Dragon Hall has been a strong catalyst for this. The development plans outlined for Dragon Hall will help its ambitions to be a world class centre for writing.'

Chris Gribble, Writers' Centre Norwich chief executive, said: 'The National Centre for Writing will be a really significant development for the literature sector and a major achievement for England's first UNESCO City of Literature...It will be a world-leading centre of excellence in a city with an outstanding literary heritage.'
